If it were me, I would try going to the motherboard manufacturer website and downloading the chipset and/or USB drivers for that motherboard and reinstalling those.

Since it is a custom built computer, then one theory may be is at one time it had a manufacturer specific driver for the USB ports, but they somehow got over written or replaced by the Microsoft driver. It is a custom built computer, but has been used for over a year without this issue happening. no offense at all, I don't know how much detail you want, but it says the driver is from Microsoft I have the driver version etc. I've got absolutely no idea where to go from here, any help would be greatly appreciated!! Here's where it gets really strange though, I've got two separate USB sticks that I'm trying to get data on, stick A will only be recognized if I uninstall the driver and leave it in while Windows restarts, stick B will only be recognized if I uninstall the driver and take it out while Windows is restarting. This will work once, I can plug in the storage device it will get recognized by Windows, but when I eject the device no other storage devices will get recognized unless I uninstall the device again and restart windows. The only thing that temporarily works, is in the device manager right click on the storage device and "uninstall device" then to restart the computer. I've run windows from a clean boot and this didn't solve the problem either.Ħ. I ran Windows Hardware and Device Troubleshooter and it was unable to find anything wrong.ĥ.

Update the driver, As far as windows is concerned the most up to date and correct driver is already installed.Ĥ. I've adjusted the power settings on the storage device in windows power options to "never" this is supposed to keep the storage device on.ģ. I've made sure Windows is completely up to date.Ģ. (Code 38)" I've googled that problem, and all of the "Solutions" suggested didn't work.Ī couple of the things I've tried are the following.ġ. When I go to it's properties it says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory.

However it does show up in the device manager under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" as "USB Mass Storage Device" with a little yellow triangle and an !. I've checked the disk management and they don't show up there either. and they work fine, but if I plug in a USB Drive, or a external hard drive they start up (lights flash/hard disk spins) but the computer won't recognize it. Once the Windows defender drags its claws onto the external hdd, you are unable to safely remove it.
